Director of the General Biology Program The Department of Biology at Appalachian State University
()
invites applications for a continuing 11-month, non-tenure-track
position as Director of the General Biology Program commencing
September 1, 2018. The position comes with an initial two-year
contract, renewable for three years after a review at the end of
the first year. This individual will be responsible for the
continued development and management of a progressive introductory
program, which consists of four courses for majors and non-science
majors enrolling over 4000 students annually. Specific duties
include updating laboratory curricula to reflect best practices in
biology education, developing and implementing program assessment,
serving as Chair of the Freshman Biology Committee, supervising and
training of 30+ graduate teaching assistants, conducting
performance evaluations of teaching assistants and program support
positions, and administering placement and exemption exams. The
individual is expected to teach 3 hours per semester in the
program.

The requirements for the position are an EdD with an emphasis in
Biology or a PhD in the Biological Sciences or Science Education.
Experience teaching and/or designing inquiry-based labs in the
biological sciences is expected. The successful candidate will
possess an understanding of the factors influencing science
education, a strong knowledge of technology in the education
process, and the ability to serve as a strong advocate for the
program. Effective communication and organizational skills
are essential.
